Hi,

Imipramine is a try cyclic antidepressant and like any drugs, it can have its side effects. How most of the time it is a safe drug. Its prolong use depends on the need. If your depression is controlled with it, we may think of gradual withdrawal of the drug but In many cases, it may be needed for quite long time and has been found safe but should be only continued if there is a need for it. That's what your psychiatrist would decide.

Your psychiatrist will interview you regularly and would assess you if you can stop the drug or you need to continue it. He may also assess if you need a dose adjustment or change of the drug depending on your disease.

We generally avoid this drug in patients with heart diseases and very old people otherwise it's safe.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
