Is Levothyroxine Intake Necessary For Treatment Of Hypothyroidism?

I finished my chemo and radiation last August 8th .I had cancer of the throat and my catscan in November showed no cancer remaining. However, my last bloodwork (2 weeks ago) showed I have hypothyroid levels. The nurse said it may have been due to the radiation, but to begin taking 25mcg of Levothyroxine.I have none of the symptoms listed on the prescription info. as in weight gain, aching muscles, no energy, etc. So they suggested I can wait until 6weeks to begin them before my next ctscan and labs and appointment with the chemo doctor. The side effects are weight gain, hair loss to name a couple. My hair is now growing in finally in the back that I lost during treatment last summer. Is it necessary in your opinion to start this medication..possibly taking for life? Thank you YYYY@YYYY

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

>If you do not have any symptoms, depending on how much you are low on thyroid, it is ok to wait some more time to give the thyroid gland opportunity to recover. However, if you notice any symptoms it is ideal to start levothyroxine. If the thyroid hormone levels have not normalized in 6.weeks, then thyroid supplementation is necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
