Is Levothyroxine The Right Medicine For Hypothyroidism?

My boyfiend is 49 and was diagnosed with hypothryoidism, put on levothyoxine. Since put on this meds he had been up and down mood and energy level, energy level has been really low. he was put on the lowest dose. how long does it take to show some sort of improvement? He is not sleeping well also. he smokes and drinks in excess, would that play a role?

Hi, thanks for asking in health care magic.

After reading his brief history, I interpret his levothyroxine dose needs adjustment. Once it is started, one must go for thyroid function tests after 6-8 weeks. The usual adult dose in 150mcg. Dose can be increased on the basis of thyroid function tests report.

Alcohol & smoking should be avoided as much as he can.

Hope my answer will help you.
Regards,
Dr. Maria Daud
