Is Macrobid Different From Bactrim?

Are there any similarities between macrobid and bactrim? My wife was always allergic to bactrim and she recently contracted a UTI and was prescribed macrobid. She has reacted the exact same way for both. She get a raised rash just off to the right of her right breast. It is hot to the touchand very itchy. Do these antibiotics come from the same, or similar, source?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Macrobid is Nitrofurantoin antibiotic. Both Bactrim and Macrobid inhibit bacterial DNA chain formation, but pathways are different.

If you see she is having an allergic reaction stop using the medication and contact with your doctor so he may prescribe another antibiotic.

I would suggest for her an Azithromycin antibiotic, this is usually well tolerated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
