Hi, my husband and I will be headed to Malawi, Africa soon. I am concerned about the interactions of antimalarial drugs with his liver. A little over a month ago he was in the hospital with a severe pneumonia, and just yesterday he got routine bloodwork back showing elevated alt. is there anything we should know about taking malarone with elevated alt?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It's not safe to take Malarone while having elevated ALT levels. Although less common however one of the side effects of the antimalarial drug Malarone is an increased level of ALT indicating liver injury so it is not safe to take it in presence of an elevated ALT levels.

Ask his doctor for an alternate effective but a safer drugs for the prevention of malaria.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
