Is Meftal For Fever In A Child Safe?

My daughter is 20 months old. She had fever of 102F. Normally active, fever comes down after calpol. But yesterday it was still high so gave Mephtal as suggested by Doc in emergency OPD. Fever came down. But last night it was high again, gave calpol again at 6 today morning and by 11 the fever was at 99degree. She seems tired and sleepy. Is less active than usual. Should we try to avoid giving mephtal because a lot of friends have been telling me that it is bad for baby.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your daughter is suffering from fever and you gave Meftal to child which is good to use for short term basis as it is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and has risk of gastritis and renal problems in the long run, so avoid it for long run as your child is suffering from viral illness it will take 4-7 days to come back to normal. I would suggest you to take paracetamol as for fever only paracetamol will be sufficient as the child is responding to this drug well, normal dose is 10 mg / kg body weight. You should do cold sponging to child.Give plenty of fluids to child to maintain hydration levels. Visit Pediatrician once if symptoms keeps on worsening.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
