Is Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine Recommended For A 12 Year Old?

I think my 12 year old son may have Pityriasis rosea - we have not yet been to the doctor as he had only about 6 spots and no change for about a week. No discomfort or itching at all. Tonight noticed a few more - another 5 or 6 more - and tomorrow the school vaccination for meningitis is scheduled. Should he have the vaccination as scheduled? It is too late here to go to a walk-in clinic and of course too late for our doctor s office to be open. Thank you.

Hi,

Yes it is given routinely to 11 to 12 years old children. As per CDC recommendation meningococcal conjugate vaccine should be given to 11 to 12 years old children.

Since protection decreases over time, CDC also recommends a booster dose at age 16 years which provides protection for the adolescents who are at highest risk of meningococcal disease.

Having a suspected pityriasis rosea is not a contraindication for this vaccination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
