Is Mirtazapine Safe During Pregnancy?

Mirtazipine while pregnant? Is it safe? Right now I am 6 weeks 4 days. Here s my problem, I m 21 years old I have had appetite issues all my life. When I try to eat it s hard for me to swallow the food I get super nauseous and immediately want to throw up. I was prescribed mirtazipine about 2 years ago. (For appetite and sleep) I take it every night at bed time. Now I eat a lot and gained about 20 pounds! Is it safe for me to take it? I am super scared because I am on my first trimester and don t want anything to happen to my baby. I don t have a doctors appointment until June 27th and that s a week away. Is there maybe other appetite stimulants that wont hurt my baby?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As you know that mirtazapine is an antidepressant and it is known to have adverse effects on the fetus although it has not been proved in humans. So I'd say it is better to discuss with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
