Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello I have recently had surgery to remove a endometrioid ovarian tumor. I am mid way through radiation treatments and have been told I will need chemo following that. My doctor is concerned about how many rounds of chemo I should have because he does not want to risk my developing neuropathy. Somewhere along the way, I was told that administering neurontin could help prevent neuropathy. Is this the case?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Neurontin is composed of 'gabapentin', which is an anti-epileptic medication. It is used to treat seizures. It is also used in adults to treat nerve pain caused by herpes virus or shingles. Hence, it is not the medication which would help to treat peripheral neuropathy. You need to take medication containing Vitamin B12, Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), Pantothenic acid along with antioxidants like Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Selenium to prevent and overcome peripheral neuropathy. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best. Regards, Dr.Ashakiran.S. MBBS., MD.
