Is Nexium Tablet The Right Medicine For Acidity?

I had a vomiting and diarrhoea bug 3 days ago. I take 40mg nexium daily for Gerd. My throat is burning with acidity and bled a little. I cannot lie down to go to sleep. I just took some gaviscon. Would it help to take a nexium tablet to relieve the acidity?

Hi & Welcome.

Yes, Nexium is effective in reducing the stomach acidity.

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor which works by suppressing the acid production in the stomach is commonly prescribed for the treatment of acidity related issues such as gastritis, stomach ulcer or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).

Based on the history you seem to be suffering from GERD.

Antacids like Gaviscon neutralize the stomach acid and may provide quick relief but won't heal an inflamed esophagus damaged by stomach acid.

Proton pump inhibitors like Nexium are the standard treatment of GERD. It not only suppresses the acid production in the stomach but also promotes the healing of damaged lining of the esophagus.

Continue to take once daily at least one hour before breakfast for at least 1-2 weeks.

Besides, you should have the following lifestyle changes to prevent GERD like:

1. Avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeine, and stress.
2. Do regular exercise and maintain a healthy weight.
3. Avoid tight-fitting clothing.
4. Avoid foods and drinks that trigger heartburn such as fatty or fried foods, tomato sauce, chocolate, mint, garlic, onion, and spicy foods.
5. Eat smaller meals. Avoid overeating by eating smaller meals.
6/ Don't lie down after a meal. Wait at least three hours after eating before lying down or going to bed.
6. Elevate the head of your bed. Place wood or cement blocks under the feet of your bed so that the head end is raised by 6 to 9 inches.

Hope the advice given above would be beneficial in getting rid of the symptoms of GERD.
