what would be the problem with using a small dose 15mg. of oxycodone on a regular basis if you dont need it. I m 72 years old and was on oxy for 2 years because of a bad hip. My hip was replaced on 11/4/16 and have been oxy free for 8 weeks now, but I miss it, i m am 100% pain free now, but what would be the harm of takeing a small dose regulary for the rest of my life. It makes ma feel better. I have no other health problems an take no other R/X or recreational drugs. thanks Walt
Hello, Thank you for the query and welcome to healthcare magic
You should not continue taking oxycodone after prescription time is over. Oxycodone is classified as an opoid/narcotic and your doctor prescribed it to you because he/she thought that it was necessary for pain management. But since currently you do not need it for pain management, the medication have to be discontinued. It has various side effects like insomnia, drowsiness, breathing difficulty, constipation, urinary retention, liver damage, problems with dependence and eventually addiction. Oxycodone should not be continued for a life time unnecessarily.
Since you feel the need to continue taking oxycodone, you have likely developed dependence to the medication.I recommend that you consult your doctor as soon as possible to seek help.
Hope I was able to answer your question Please feel free to address any more concerns, Regards, Dr.Lekshmi
