Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
having upper abdominal pain/discomfort. I am not able to associate it a specific food at this time. It is not constant but occurs several times throughout day and evening. I will take Prilosec to help relieve it. Doesn t always work. how do I know if it is just digestion/IBS issues vs something more serious.
Hi. Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen which comes on any time can be due to gastritis, acidity related problems, GERD or even IBS as you have noted correctly hence sometimes there may not be any effect on taking Prilosec. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Get an upper GI Endoscopy to make sure what the diagnosis is so that an appropriate additional treatment an be taken. If the upper GI Endoscopy is normal then you have surely to go for the further investigations of Ultrasonography, colonoscopy tests of blood, stool and urine. If all the investigations are normal then this can be take as due to IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome. Control of stress and anxiety helps a lot in addition to the specific medical management of IBS.
