Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Proamatine Advisable For Low Blood Pressure In A Heart Patient?
my mom was on Proamatine to bring her BP up as she had chronically low blood pressure. They thought this was due to her Parkinson s or Parkinson s meds. She is no longer on this medication as it may have been d/c d after a hospitalization where CHF was diagnosed. She no longer has the edema associated with CHF but still has chronically low BP. Wondering if it would be too dangerous to start this medication again so she could have more energy? Could this be contraindicated for CHF?
Ok, first there is the hard wired proclivity to look at getting a drug to treat everything. This gets silly when everything is due to a drug!
It is common in CHF to give medicines that vastly improve life expectancy by increasing the amount of blood the heart pumps by opening up blood vessels.
This also lowers blood pressure. Proamantine reverses the lower blood pressure but it also probably reverses the life-saving effects of the CHF medicines.
Better is lowering their dose if that works. cannot say in this particular case but it would be decidedly odd if someone with CHF were NOT on medication for it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
