Is Protonix Advisable For Hypochlorhydria?

I had a barium esophagram and an upper endoscopy. Findings are: small hiatal hernia with mild gastroesophageal reflux , normal hypopharynx , ring present in GE junction, dilation performed , mild esophagitis in GE Junction - 4 biopsies taken , normal stomach - 4 biopsies taken , normal duodenum . Biopsies negative. I was prescriped Protonix, 40mg daily. Question: Protonix appears to be a medication for hyperchlorhydria. What if I have hypochlorhydria? Should I begin this drug therapy before having a PH diagnostic test to determine my stomach acid levels?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

Yes,I suggest you to begin protonix treatment.Your diagnosis denotes gastroesophageal reflux which occurs due to increased acid secretion.Hence you require drugs to reduce acid secretion. So you can start with the treatment.

Hope that was helpful.Let me know if i can assist you further.

Regards
