Is Pyorrhea Of Gums Contagious Diseases?

Hi,

One of my close relatives is having Pyorrhea of gums; the disease is in initial stages as per the person , however I can smell her mouth really bad from a distance. Now the problem is that the same person has to baby-sit my newborn and I am worried if this disease can be transmitted to the newborn or not? The doctors have advised her to get all her teeth extracted , though she relies on homeopathic medicines and does not want to live on dentures.

Please help.

Best Regards

Hi. Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
I read your query. Pyrrhoea or Periodontitis is actually a gum disease due to bacterial infection. Though its not contagious but can spread through contaminated saliva.
If the lady has been advised extraction and denture, that means she has severe periodontitis. It would be good if she can get the treatment done.
Else just ask her to maintain proper hygiene with the baby. And use of face mask for the mouth odor. Meanwhile she can use Chlorhex mouthwash two times a day.
Hope the answer helps. Thank you.
