Is Sulfasalazine Safe To Take While Suffering From Bowel Blockage And Low Platelet Count?

Is it safe to take sulfasalazine or lialda for ulcerative colitis when you ve had a bowel blockage and also have a very low platelet count ? The information on sulfasalazine information says if you ve had a bowel blockage not to use sulfasalazine and it also indicates that you can become anemic taking sulfasalazine. Is one or the other of these two drugs safe to take given my current health problems?

Hello, and thanks for your question.

I would advise against using sulfasalazine in this situation. It is a steroid and can lead to erosion of the bowel wall, which makes one prone to bowel rupture. Further, low platelets makes it more likely you might experience gastric or bowel bleeding. Be very careful and discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
