Is Tamsulosin And Dutasteride An Equivalent For Flomax?

My husband was seen at the ER this morning for urinary blockage. He was catheterized and given an RX for Flomax. Our pharmacy would not fill the RX, stating he was already on Tamsulosin 0.4 mg and Dutasteride 0.5mg. Should he take both of these in place of the Flomax?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Flomax contains tamsulosin hydrochloride which is prescribed for enlarged prostate and it works by relaxing the muscle in bladder and prostate. Dutasteride works by reducing the size of the prostate.

Your husband is already taking a combination of both the drugs so Flomax is not needed as it contains only tamsulosin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
