Is Topamax, Effective For Migraine?

I ve recently been prescribed Topamax for migraines and when I first started taking it I experienced some side effects similar to those described by many others. My question is, is this a highly recommended medication for migraines for long term use or will it result in permanent damage?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

Topamax is mainly an anti-convulsant medication, and not necessarily for the migraine. I would suggest you talk to your doctor about what his/her plan of treatment is. Specifically for the migraines you could use sumatriptan or propranolol preparations.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
