Hello,
Trivenz is used as antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people who are already HIV-positive. While it contains two of the right drugs for PEP (
post-exposure prophylaxis),
efavirenz, the third ingredient is not recommended for PEP because of its neuropsychiatric side effects and reduced tolerability.
If the unprotected sex was within 72 hours, you need PEP. However, before taking PEP, you already have a negative test but also get liver and kidney function test done as PEP affects these organs. PEP is advised to be started within 72 hours of exposure and taken correctly for 28 days. It is very effective (over 90%) at preventing HIV infection.
However, follow-up HIV testing is needed at 6 weeks, 12 weeks and sometimes 6 months after exposure. Trivenz is not the correct medication for HIV prevention after exposure. You are advised to visit an HIV clinic or HIV specialist. You have to take PEP, take
Tenofovir,
Emtricitabine, Dolutegravir or
Raltegravir within 72 hours of exposure, for 28 days.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
