Is WBC Count Of 12.5 A Cause For Concern?

Hi, I recently spent 3 nights in hospital with suspected appendicitus. I had stomach pains Friday night which were still the same Saturday night. As it had been 24 hours with the pain not getting better even with taking paracetamol I went to hospital. I explained that it hurt to move my right leg. And even going over speed bumps in the car was painful. There was pain where the doctor pressed me on my right side. So they admitted me with surgeons saying they would operate in the morning. My bloods came back with WBC of 12.5 and inflammation of 119. I was also put on IV drip and antibiotics. The next morning the consultant checked me over and decided I didn t need surgery. I again spent another night in hospital with the ultrasound being clear. The morning after the consultant saw me again saying I may be discharged. The nurse then approached saying my bloods came back higher than the day before inflammtion is vow 135. So she spoke to the surgeons who were unhappy to discharge me and do another blood test in the morning. The consultant saw me again the next morning and as I seemed ok she said not to bother with the blood test and go home. Should I be worried about this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As per your history, it may be due to inflammatory response to the infection

Raised wbc count may be due to appendicitis. For further assessment kindly do complete hemogram, ultrasound abdomen and pelvis after consultation.

In that case you may require surgical intervention. Take soft food. Keep your self hydrated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale, General & Family Physician
