Is Zarah A Safe Birth Control Medication?

Hi, I was just prescribed ZARAH for birth control. My doctor is aware that I have C.A.H but while reading the pamphlet, I noticed that under Who should not take Zarah it says, Your healthcare provider will not give you Zarah if you: ...Have adrenal disease (last bullet on the list). I trust my doctor but this caused concern and I just wanted to get a second opinion before I start taking the medication. I m a 27 year old female taking 0.5mg of Dexamethasone each night. Thank you for your time! Simone

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Zarah is a combination of 2 hormones: an estrogen in the form of ethinyl estradiol and a progestin in the form of drospirenone. It is used to prevent pregnancy.
It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from fertilization of egg and changes the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg.
Before using this product, tell must tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have adrenal gland problems, stroke, blood clots, untreated/uncontrolled high blood pressure and abnormal breast examination.
In case you have adrenal problem you are mentioning, this birth control pill is not recommended to be used.
Kindly consult your doctor so that proper contraceptive can be instituted which would suit you upon evaluation.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
