Is A Baker’s Cyst The Cause For Numbness Above The Knee?

Hello Dr. have had a bakers cyst since 2013. When I had an MRI last year due to an injury it grew. For about 6 months I have had tenderness in my leg and it is sensitive to touch along with numbness from above my knee cap all the way down to my toes. Is it possible that the cyst can be pushing on a nerve and can the cyst be removed. I went to my ortho today and he told me that because I have had an injury its normal for it to go numb. Is that normal. Thank you, Christina

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are wondering Baker’s cyst the cause for numbness above the knee . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like soft tissue injury , hematoma , nerve injury or compression . The symptoms you mention in query is probably not occurring due to baker's cyst , although it can cause stifness and inability of joint to move. I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with nerve conduction test . Doctor may prescribe anti inflammatory along with nerve supplement and recommend physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgery in severe nerve damage and baker's cyst . For now keep your leg elevated while sleeping and apply warm compresses several times a day .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
