Is A MRI Required To Check Muscle In An Elderly Person?

I am 70 years old with normal blood pressure and low cholesterol and very fit. I do not smoke or drink alcohol. However my cardiologist did a 24 hour holder where I had 7000 ectopic beats. All heart results from ultrasound came up with normal heart results eg 54% when heart much and normal size heart and no problems. However my cardiologist has asked me to have an MRI to ensure muscle is ok. I am now in panic mode. Is there any danger. I don t even feel the ectopic beat and have no physical symptoms at all. Thank you for your kind advice. I do need some assurance. Also there is no heart disease in my family eg parents.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I can understand your concern.

Usually the ultrasound scan of your heart can identify any structural abnormality, means the clarity of the scan is not that much that most of the time it could not determine the muscle structure. It can measure the thickness of muscle and any abnormality in movement while the muscle is contracting. Most of the time it is enough to determine the reason for the heart pain and symptoms.

In some cases, as yours, every investigation is found to be normal. in order to know any muscle abnormality, Heart MRI is recommended. The Resolution and clarity of MRI is fr better than Ultrasound.

So, no need to worry. Better go with the doctor's plan to do MRI.
Hope you understood.
