Is A UTI A Cause For Concern If A Catheter Is Placed?
i am a 21 year old female diagnosed with my very first UTI , I was put on Bactrum, and have a catheter placed to empty my bladder because I couldn t urinate, my concern is they are telling me I have to wear it for a week which seem odd to me everyone I talk to who have had a UTI say they never had to wear one. Please let me know your opinion, I just don t want complications from wearing it for so long!!! THANK YOU, Marinna
Hello, In case of UTI, antibacterial therapy and passage of urine as much as possible are important things. Passing urine and getting bladder empty frequently, help to evacuate bacteria and reduce the infection quickly. As you said, in your case you can not urinate so placing a urine Catheter is important. In a week your bladder will get empty quickly with the help of catheter and your kidneys function will remain normal as well. By the time infection will be subsided and after removal of catheter your urethral sphincter will start working properly. In old female patients, sometimes Urinary incontinence may occur after UTI and catheterization due to weakness of urethral sphincter. But in young patients it's rare.
Thanks & Take Care, Dr. Suraj D.
