Is A Hard Lump On Thigh Post A Fall While Having Osteoarthritis A Cause For Concern?

I fell hard six weeks ago. I developed a huge bruise on the outer part of my thigh beneath my left hip. In addition, a huge lump appeared at point of contact. Now, the bruising is gone but the lump has persisted, although not painful as in the beginning. I am a 70 -year-old female with severe osteoarthritis. Should I see a doctor about the lump? What might it be? Thank you, YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the hard lump on thigh following history of blunt injury via fall indicate formation of hematoma most likely intramuscular compartment. The persistent lump is matter of concern irrespective of pain status as there may be secondary infection inside the hematoma and may be turning into abscess condition.

Guidelines for better recovery:
- Local application of ice
- Prescription of antibiotics as Cephalexin or Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid which help better resolution of lump and prevention of secondary bacterial infection
- Anti-inflammatory medications like Diclofenac or Tramadol hydrochloride
- Proteolytic enzymes such as serratiopeptidase or chymoral forte
- Control of blood sugar

Being in regular follow up with your primary care provider is best way for best results and avoid unnecessary complications.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
