Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is A Heartbeat Of 46 Beats Per Minute A Matter Of Concern?
my son is 16 years old, and woke up this morning at 3:30 am with a UTI--he felt like he was going to pass out and came to see us (my wife is a former nurse). i walked him back to the bed--his heart rate, according to him, had sped up during the process; but when we laid him in the bed, it slowed down to 46 beats per minute. I am confident that his UTI can be eliminated with AZO Standard; but i am concerned about his heart. i have been reading online that 46 beats per minute is quite normal for a lot of athletes (my son plays soccer and runs track, so he s always running). i know i need to take him to a doctor this week; but is there anything you can say to me to take away my current worries?
The heart beat of 46 may be of various clinical significance and the decisive factors for the same are: - Its duration - Past history or recordings of such low pulse if available - Onset after particular medicine intake only - Symptoms of uneasiness, fatigue, lethargy, impending doom or others
In a nutshell, it can be benign physiologic finding and it can be pathologic. It is best recommended to observe the pulse over a period of 2-3 hours if there are no current symptoms for him. Awaiting for your follow up with further readings of pulse rate.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
