Is A Knee Replacement Surgery Remedy For Meniscus Tear, Cartilage Shredding And Arthritis?

MRI shows meniscus tear, cartilage shredding, arthritis, a cyst and thickening of the ACL. My doctor is referring me to a surgeon. I m 52 yrs old, I walk 2 miles a day, I bowl, and run a family of 5 plus we live on a farm. This will be my 3rd surgery on this knee. My last surgery was in July 2014. Should I look into a knee replacement at this point?

Hello,

First of all, knee replacement surgery is the last option when it comes to the treatment of arthritis and other related issues of the knee joint. As you said, you can still do pretty much day to day activities.

With age, there is wear and tear seen in the joints but in your case you have already undergone surgery previously and depending on current condition (ligament tear, cyst) of your knee joint, your doctor has referred you to a surgeon.

After a physical examination and looking at necessary imaging tests, depending on the need the surgeon will guide you on the requirement of knee replacement surgery.

Instead of knee replacement, you might need a small surgery for the cyst removal but that will be decided by your surgeon after going through your medical history and current health status.

So do not worry, and see the surgeon and seek appropriate medical advice for you condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
