Is A Loose Clot On The Hole Post Wisdom Tooth Extraction A Cause For Concern?

I just got all my wisdom teeth out. It is the third day at night where I am after and one of my holes started bleeding, I put a piece of gauze in place and bit down for about half an hour. I tried to go to bed soon after but while I was sleeping a large loose clot formed around the area. I rinsed my mouth and then proceeded to remove the clot with some dry gauze. Bleeding has mostly stopped, am I okay?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain there is a possibility the initial clot that was formed after tooth extraction leading to bleeding and even the loose clot that is formed is also removed by you so there is a chance of forming Dry Socket that is unhealed extraction socket and is a painful condition too..
My suggestion is to consult your Dentist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis..
If the clot is lost then you will be given Zinc oxide eugenol packs placed in the socket for healing..
If if is present and healing is continuous then following post extraction instructions will be sufficient for appropriate healing...

Hope this helps..

Regards..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of loose clot on the hole post wisdom tooth extraction which is either a normal process of healing and it could be due to large area of laceration. Need not to worry.

I would suggest you to avoid vigorous activities. Don't smoke for at least 72 hours.

Apply ice packs inside and outside oral cavity to reduce swelling and it helps in clot formation.

Wash gently oral cavity with cold water, wipe off clots outside cavity and apply moistened gauze pad on extraction site for 30 minutes at least.

Take ibuprofen or Tylenol 200 mg tablet after every four hours to avoid pain.

To avoid bleeding sit upright and don't spit again and again.

Drink lot of water and cold liquids.

Take very soft diet to eat.

Don't brush oral cavity, only rinse with mouthwash.

Visit your dentist if bleeding did not stop at all as that could be due to formation of dry socket. Get sutures done.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
