Is A Mass In The Uterus An Indication Of Uterine Cancer?

My neice is 50 years old, has had heavy menstrual bleeding for quite some time, has become very anemic and looks extremely pale, weight loss of about 60 pounds. She saw her doctor yesterday and was told that she has a mass. She is special needs and does not know what that meant. Could it be uterine cancer?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
All masses which would appear in the uterus need not be cancerous in nature.
Most commonly occurring mass in the uterus which is associated with menstrual disturbances in middle aged women is non-cancerous one called 'fibroid'.
Depending on the nature of the mass, its location and associated symptoms, treatment can be planned and executed.
In case the nature of mass is inconclusive by ultrasound scan, a biopsy of it needs to be taken by means of ultrasound guidance and analysed by means of histopathological examination.
Kindly consult Gynaecologist with the report for further evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
