Is A Shunt In The Skull Advisable When Diagnosed With Hydrocephalus?
My 86 year old Mother has hydrocephalus. She had a spinal tap 3 months ago which gave her back her balance, relieved her feeling lightheaded all the time, & her short term memory got better. After 3 months the symptoms have all returned. Is it safe to have a shunt put in her brain to now drain the fluid at 86 years old?

Is A Shunt In The Skull Advisable When Diagnosed With Hydrocephalus?
Hello, As per your description, it seems like she is having persistent hydrocephalus. The shunt will be the best possible option for her. She will not cop up with major surgery and shunt will provide long term disease-free interval. Moreover, it is a relatively easy procedure and she can withstand anesthesia and surgery. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care Regards, Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
