Is A Swollen Lump Below The Knee With Discoloration A Concern?

I fell down the three steps leading into the garage. I hit my legs pretty hard. On my right leg there is swelling and a knot/lump two inches below my knee. I can walk and I thought the pain wasn t that bad. However, ten hours later while lying in bed I slid my leg sideways and sharp pain occurred at the site radiated to my outer leg, still two inches below my knee. There is no visible bruising yet, just some slight blue discoloration. Does this require an ER visit?

Pain related to trauma can increase hours up to 2 days after the traumatic event.

If you can still ambulate, it is not likely that there is a break unless the pain is very very severe.
If you are not sure , then it would be best to be assessed.

Most soft tissue injuries can be treated by: PRICE MM. This means : (1)protection of the affected area,
(2) rest,
(3)ice therapy applied to the area 2 to 3 times daily for 10 to 15 mins
(4)compression to prevent or reduce swelling
(5)elevation
(6)medications such as cataflam, ibuprofen, naproxen, voltaren
(7)modalities such as physiotherapy in more severe injuries
