My wife just noticed a lump under the left side of her chin that is about the size of a walnut. It is tender to the touch. It appeared all of a sudden. She is 66 years old. It is in the area of a gland that sometimes swells when you have a bad cold. Any ideas?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
A tender lump under the chin on the left side can be due to causes like either swelling in the salivary gland or due to inflammation and swelling of the lymph nodes.
So it is advisable to consult an emergency room and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and x-ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.
You can be advised antibiotics like Augmentin and anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and also do alternate warm and cool compresses over the swelling. Avoid spicy foods and drink ample of water.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
