Is Abdominal Pain Before Periods Normal?

hello:) i am a teen and my left side hurts really bad. At fist i thought it would be bad but i got my period the next day. is that normal? i also have the pain out of nowhere when i am not on my period. it hurts and i feel it would be because i hold in my urine too much. But it hurts and its about right under my ribs. what should i do?
