Aciclovir is a specific treatment for the harpies viral infection. You have to take the medicine for 7 days. The vesicular lesions may disappear after 2-3 weeks. However, if the pain is very severe you may need additionally corticosteroids medicine for 1-2 weeks after which this can be stopped gradually by tapering the dose for 1-2 weeks. In some people the pain will persist for 6 months to 1 year ( post -hypetic neuralgia). In such a case drug like amitriptyline may be useful in relieving the pain.
