Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Adding Potassium Chloride To IV Fluid For Gastroenteritis In A Child Safe?
Before adding IV potassium chloride to existing IV fluid for a 8 year old child with severe gastroenteritis, what is critical for the nurse to assess? Ability to have a bowel movement independently?, Able to eat sold foods?, Ability of the client to void?, Bowel sounds are active?
Understanding your concern. As per your query your child is having symptoms of gastroenteritis which is very common in this age group and most of it is caused due to viral infections. Need not to worry at all. I would suggest you to ensure you are giving adequate hydration, oral intake and replenishing water to avoid salt losses. You should give oral rehydration solution. Give combination of antibiotic along with antihistamine medication. Visit gastroenterologist once and get it examined. You should go for complete examination and start treatment after that. Potassium chloride with intravenous fluid administration is also recommended.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
