Is Alternating Foot Coldness With Heat Normal After Lumbar Fusion Surgery?

Hi, my father had a lumbar fusion done on Feb 2010. He now has numbness from his right knee down to his his right foot. He also feels extremes of coldness and heat to his foot. He is unable to walk unless he has a walking stick as he feels off balance at times. Is this a normal thing to occur after such an operation
