Is An MRI Necessary For Knee Pain?

I have had right knee pain for several months. Went to dr., took xrays and was told I had arthrisis but pain shoots up to the front muscle on upper leg and now it seems like my left leg is hurting too not left knee but upper front muscle. Dr. recommends injection on right knee. Should I have a MRI done before going injection route? Forget it not paying!!!!

Hello,

If pain is arthritic in nature, you do not need an MRI. But if cause is still not clear yet and the doctor thinks of a traumatic injury within the knee cavity, like looking for a ruptured ligament of sports injury, he will go for an MRI Then.

For Upper leg muscles (I guess you talking about thigh muscles) associated pain need an evaluation.

It can be an integral part of this knee pain or it may be something separate disease.

I will suggest you visit a doctor, so that he can physically examine you after a detailed history from you, for this thigh pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
