Is An Ulcer In The Mouth A Symptom Of HIV?

HI Doctor:I performed mutual oral sex with a girl but I wore the condom for penetration sex. I probably have a small ulcer in my mouth doing the oral sex with the girl. Could you please advise me of my chance of getting infected with HIV? I am very much worried. Thank you.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. HIV is not transmitted through saliva, and you mentioned that you used condom for the penetration sex. Thus, your chances of being HIV infected are less. However, if you want to test for it, you should go for ELISA test which detects antibodies against HIV virus in your blood. You can go for the test after a week of the possible exposure and if negative, you should repeat the test after 86 days of the possible exposure. If that also comes negative, then you can be assured that you are not infected with HIV infection.

The ulcer in your mouth could just be an apthous ulcer or canker sore. I would advise you to start Vitamin B complex supplements such as B-Folcin once a day for 15 days and apply local Benzocaine gel (Mucopain) over the ulcer 3-4 times a day. The ulcer does not seem to be due to HIV infection. It might take about 7 days to heal. However, if it does not heal for 2 weeks, you should see a dentist for clinical examination of the ulcer and further investigations.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
