Is Avoiding Cycling Recommended For Peripheral Neuropathy In Both The Feet?

I am a cyclist, and for some reason I have developed peripheral neuropathy in both feet. The neurologist guesses that it may be from my cycling shoes being too tight, overuse of many miles on my bike, etc. The orthopaedic surgeon and family practice doctor think it has nothing to do with cycling. Based on the nerve tests, I only have 30 percent of the nerve signals in my feet, but my legs are normal. Should I avoid cycling all together to see if the nerve signals repair themselves?

My advice is that you should get your blood sugar levels checked first . That is your Fasting blood sugar and Post prandial blood sugar. You should also get a complete blood count and Vitamin B12 assay and TSH level done. Some of the causes of peripheral neuropathy are metabolic such as Diabetes mellitus ,others are are related to Vitamin B deficiency, some due to decreased thyroid function. Certain immunological disorders and infections may also present as peripheral neuropathy. From your history it your neuropathy may be related to compression such as cycling. However , if the above tests have not been done it is worthwhile to get them done and rule out other causes of peripheral neuropathy. I presume that electrodiagnostic studies have been done by your neurologist. You may also get an abdominal ultrasound done if there are any masses that are causing compression leading to peripheral neuropathy. From your history it is better to avoid cycling as this may cause further compression and delay the recovery of your nerves. You should also protect your feet with soft shoes and avoid getting any scrapes or abrasions on your feet . As the sensations in your feet are less there is a risk of being unaware to injury on your feet . Also please avoid walking bare foot and do not expose your feet to hot water. If the above tests are negative and your peripheral neuropathy still persists you may get some relief by consulting a qualified chiropractor. Best regards
