Is Bleeding On The Brain A Serious Condition?

How serious is bleeding on the brain, not in the brain? My sister recently fell and hit her head. She is in ICU at the moment with a very swollen face and ears. The hospital has her on a breathing tude. The nurse tells me there is bleeding on the brain, but the second CAT scan showed it had stabilized. How worried should I be? How long is receovery?
