Is Blood In The Stools An Indication Of Colon Cancer?

Hi. I first got a diagnosis of microcytosis following a blood test. My doctor then had me do a stool sample to see if I was losing blood. There was blood in the stool - not visible to me. Now I need a colonoscopy and am so worried that this indicates cancer. My mother had colon cancer. Are there any other reasons for these test results? YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Blood in stool is present in many diseases like dysentery, hemorrhoids, fissure, constipation and many more. So, it is not always because of colon cancer. Indication of Colonoscopy is to find out the cause of blood in stool.

History of colon cancer in your mother is not that much significant that you also develop colon cancer. There are many causes of colon cancer including hereditary factors. I will suggest you review with detailed history or consult with surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale
