Hello! My sister has CVID and is currently very ill with double pneumonia. She is not responding to IV antibiotics (6 days), steroid packs and several other interventions, and was hospitalized last night for further treatment and diagnostic work. My two questions are these, please: 1) Her blood oxygen was at 92 last night, and she has been struggling for breath for nearly two weeks. They told her that they would not administer O2 unless she was down to 88!, but we advocated for her request, and they gave her a low flow of O2 later in the night. What O2 level would you suggest is sufficiently low to benefit from O2 therapy, and in her case, is there anything to be aware of in receiving that support? 2) I am without a spleen (to correct childhood ITP, I am now aged 56). I have had several pneumococcal vaccines over my lifetime. I wear a mask and repeatedly wash my hands when with my sister. Beyond these precautions, am I at risk of contagion from her if I visit her while she is actively sick in the hospital? Thank you so very much!!!
