Is Brain Damage A Possibility After Being Underwater?

i dont know how long my nephew was under the water when they found him but on the way to the hospital he was breathing & now hes on life support in the hospital hes not breathing by him self but his heart is still going, do you think he will make it ? & if you do will he have brain damage.
