Is Bruising And Swelling In Foot Post Shin Injury A Cause For Concern?

I had a little fall about five days ago and bruised my shin and got a little cut on it- it s very painful when I put any pressure on that leg- now all of the sudden the whole part of my inner foot is bruised and the top of my foot is swollen pretty bad and I do have some pitting edema in my shin and also on my foot- is this a common thing for a shin injury or should I seek medical attention- it just concerns me that it took 5 days for my foot to bruise and swell the way it did over night- if you could give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it- just don t want to make a pointless silly trip to urgent care.

Hi,

In my opinion you may have bruised your shin bone (tibial contusion) and possibly suffered an injury to your foot and ankle as well. Sometimes following injury to bone such as from a fall, swelling and bruising may not be apparent right after the injury because the bone is deep under the skin and muscle. You can try resting and elevating your leg above heart level, applying ice packs to the affected area, and bandage wrapping your foot and leg to reduce pain and swelling. A pain reliever and anti inflammatory drug like ibuprofen may help too. Tibial contusion can take 3 weeks or longer to resolve.

Since your swelling and bruising has become worse, I would advise you to get evaluated by a doctor. Your doctor may want you to get an x-ray to rule out a possible fracture.

Hope this helps answer your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,

Dr. Aaron Shapiro
