Is Cast Necessary After Surgery For Repair Of Finger?

Cut my left ring finger 2 weeks ago and slashed a nerve. had surgery to repair it and had a cast put on.the cast just fell off and im wondering if there was a need for the cast? I've re-bandaged the wound but im worried about infection. it was not a full cast, just one on the back of my hand
