Is Chest Discomfort Normal While On Atenolol?

I am on 25 mg's of atenolol for slight heart murmur and sleep apnea. Some nights my heart is beating so fast it wakes me up and other times I feel as though I have a chest cold. My chest doesnt' hurt but I experience discomfort. Is this normal? I have a follow up appointment with my cardiologist on 20 Sep 17.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1.Atenolol is a prescription drug belonging to the class of beta blockers which helps to lower heart rate and the demand for oxygen thereby prescribed in heart problems and since it has been prescribed for slight heat murmur thus evaluation by a Cardiologist is necessary to exclude ventricular hypertrophy which might/may be a factor in determining treatment or diagnosis for other conditions like IHD (ischemic heart disease), Aortic stenosis, systemic hypertension, cardiomyopathy, or hyperdynamic circulation.

PS. other investigations which can be done to make sure that whether it is heart-related or due to secondary disease or simple anxiety is/are:
serum T3,T4,TSH to rule out thyrotoxicosis
- ECG & Holter monitor test- to rule out Arrhythmias.
- Blood sugar to exclude hypoglycemia.
- chest x-ray for left ventricular hypertrophy.

2. Until your appointment is fixed, please incorporate following dietary regime and lifestyle changes:
. salt restricted diet [choose low sodium or Losalt ]
. maintain ideal body weight.
. limit alcohol to moderation and quit smoking
. 30 minutes of active physical exercise [avoid which raises blood pressure]
. eat fresh fruits and vegetables
