Is Colostomy The Only Option To Treat Persistent Bleeding Due To Diverticulosis?

I have diverticulosis and was hospitalized for nearly 2 weeks because of heavy bleeding, the doctors advise me to do a colostomy, is that only solution to the problem. They also they did not what side of the colony was bleeding after I did the sigmoid colonoscopy, I also did 4 ct scan of the stomach and an angiogram but they could find the source of the bleeding. Please advise .

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1.If you are diagnosed with diverticulosis on routine colonoscopy then one can follow either of the management:

i. One can consider increasing fibre in the diet.
ii. One can consider medical therapy [oral/intravenous fluids-antibiotics] but if there is very little improvement with medical therapy [including antibiotics/hospitalization] then surgery is recommended, most preferred these days is Laproscopic. [either as emergency or elective procedure]
