Is Constant Inhalation Of Rusty Smell Fumes The Cause For Indigestion?

We have recently moved to a new house in a new area and both my husband and I have started suffering from heartburn. We have moved from a soft to hard water area and have tried drinking just bottled water which made no difference. The house is heated by a very old rayburn stove which is oil burning and pretty rusty. There is a constant smell of oil. We turned off the rayburn, the smell stopped and our indegestion seems to have stopped too. Is it possible that these two could be related? the Oil and the water were the only things we could think of which have changed. Our diets have remained the same.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of indigestion after inhaling rusty smell fumes which occur mainly due to allergic response/ reaction due to volatile bleach contents , which can be poisonous. As these fumes are volatile they can cause respiratory problem due to which your throat is burning along with nervous problem which breathing problems and pain in chest and throat. Burning sensation in eyes can also occur because of contact infection due to volatile nature of fumes. I would suggest you to consult doctor for proper examination without any delay and rule out condition like poisoning. Doctor may prescribe anti emetic drug to exhale contents, antihistamine , steroid injection , analgesic. Ranitidine is effective for this. Use water based eye drops. For now take some fresh air and drink plenty of water and milk which will be helpful .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
