Is Cool Mist Humidifier Advisable For A Person With Severe COPD And Emphysema?

My mother has severe COPD and emphasema. I have always heard someone in her condition should be in a dry atmosphere. She has recently started using a cool mist humidifier because of a non professionals advise. Her symptoms seem to be getting worse. Could it be progression of the disease or too much humidity? The humidifier runs right next to where she is sitting or laying. She also uses a nebulizer 4 times a day. Please help. Thanks, Janet

Thanks for your consultation at HCM!
I have gone through your case and being your physcian i completely understands your health concerns
As far as humidifier is concerned it tends to humidifies the atmosphere and make it easier for person to breathe in and cough out , particulalry in winters when in doors heaters are running..
Oxygen therapy in copd also causes drying of nasal passages and sometimes might be irritating,,,,keeping in view this thing I DONT THINK COPD GET WORSENS BY HUMIDIFIER....if i will be in your position i will encourage her to breathe in humidified air..
AS far as her symptoms are concerned i dont think any logical association between COPD and humidifer. you better consult your treating doctor to rule out any acute infection which is exacerbating her copd..
hope your query is adequately answered if u still have any feel free to ask .
