Hello thanks for asking from Health Care Magic

I have read your query and I can understand your concern. Your mother is suffering from some mental illness and depression. She has been prescribed Pacitane, Risperidone.

From her prescription I can tell you that probably she is having some psychotic episode apart from depression. Risperidone is an anti-psychotic drug.

Normally the medicines are prescribed for long periods of time. Usually doctors continue medicines for at least 6 months post remission of symptoms.

Risperidone is a good medicine. It has potential to cause EPS (extrapyramidal side effects) as side effects. To comment more on her therapy I need details of her clinical symptoms.

Depression with psychotic features has multiple aetiologies like Serotonin and nor epinephrin imbalance, psychological insults, genetic susceptibility.

The disease is treatable with proper medicines.

The medicines are relatively safe. Pacitane is added in her prescription to prevent side effects of risperidone. Weight gain, sedation are common side effects which can be managed by simple dose adjustments.

Thanks

Hello thanks for asking from Health Care Magic

Your mother has some mental illness and depression. She is on Pacitane (THP), Sizodone forte (Risperidone) and Benzyzine.

- Risperidone is anti-psychotic drug and probably your mother has some psychotic illness or bipolar disorder. Medicines are usually given for at least 1-2 years after symptom remission.

- You have not described her symptoms in detail but for depressive symptoms medicines like amisulpiride can also prove useful.

- Depression occurs because of combination of biochemical, genetic and environmental factors. Yes depression can be treatable with proper medicinal therapy.
- She has been given Pacitane, Benzyzine along with risperidone. These drugs are given to prevent side effects of risperidone. Over all if proper follow ups are done then the drug is safe.

Consult her psychiatrist for detailed evaluation.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
